Bata, Bata, Paano ka Ginawa and Bulaklak ng City Jail by Lualhati Bautista

ABNKKBSNPLAko! by Bob Ong

Bakit Hindi ka Crush ng Crush Mo by Ramon Bautista

Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (based on The Claws of Light by  Edgardo Reyes)

What do they have in common? Well, these are some of the best Pinoy movie adaptations of books written by Filipino authors.

How about…

ZsaZsa Zaturnnah by Carlo Vergara

Darna by Mars Ravelo

And, of course, Trese by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo

These are just some of the Pinoy komiks (comics) characters that jumped from paper to the big and small screens.

Hello, I’m Kath, the founder of PaperKat Books and Head of Publishing for HS Grafik Print. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always love writing stories. Little did I know that I could make a career out of it. After self-publishing several books, I find myself creating my own “dream movie cast” and even compiling songs for the movie’s OST.

In recent weeks, I’ve been brainstorming with my colleagues and mentors in the movie industry. They want to partner with me—and my mentees—to come up with a “library” of stories and concepts that are “ripe” for movie and/or TV adaptations.

Since I started mentoring people in 2016 about self-publishing, I’ve collated a library of stories from different genres. I also come across “talents” who have concepts and even complete and published books that I believe can be turned into a film or TV series. In fact, even if I am their mentors, I end up becoming such a fan of their stories!

Here’s the problem: they don’t know whom to pitch these stories to. They don’t have the contacts. They don’t have the “window of opportunities” to pitch their stories. They don’t know how to get a “seat at the table.”

That’s where PaperKat Books’ Story Factory comes into play. This project hits two birds with one stone:

  • Give everyone the chance to submit their stories and concepts in a format that movie people are looking for.
  • Provide movie directors, producers, actors, agents, and production companies a “library” of stories and concepts from the audience themselves.

At a time when the movie and TV industry is suffering because of the pandemic and  streaming platforms are on the hunt for fresh ideas from a vast pool of writers and non-writers, PaperKat Books Story Factory aims to get the creative juices flowing and fill in the gap.

We are looking for stories in the following genres:

  • Action
  • Adventure

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR STORIES

You don’t need to have a published book to try. As long as you have a complete story, you can pitch. We accept entries in English, Tagalog, and Taglish. Submission of stories will have the following phases:

Phase 1: Story Assessment

1. Write a 100-word Story Description/Blurb. Hint: This is the text that you find on the back cover of a book.  Maximum of 100 words.

2. Write a 1,000-word Storyline/Synopsis. This should include the Beginning, Catalyst, and Ending of your story. Maximum of 1,000 words.

3. Compile everything in a Word Document file. Font should be Arial. Font size should be 12 points.

4. Add the following in the beginning (Page 1) of Word Document file:

      a. Proposed movie/tv show title

      b. Log line: a one- or two-sentence summary of the movie/tv show.

     c. Full name, email address, and mobile number. If your story gets picked, we need to know how to contact you. So don’t forget to add these.

5. Send everything to the PIC (person-in-charge) of each genre:

phase 3: Story pitch

  1. Every now and then, our contacts in the movie industry are looking for fresh concepts and stories. Once you’re part of the Story Factory Library, we will include your story in the pool of shortlisted stories included in the pitch meeting.
  2. As the story creator/author, you will be invited to the pitch meeting so you can pitch your story.

CREATE. PITCH. REPEAT.

Our goal for STORY FACTORY is to give everyone—writers or not—the chance to get a seat at the pitching table (or Zoom Meeting because face-to-face meetings are still a no-no).

At a time when we are forced to stay at home, let your imagination fly. Create stories. Create heroes and villains. Create worlds. The world is always hungry for new content. Fill that void.
