PaperKat Books

self-publishing

& mentoring

Program

You can read all the books, watch all the videos, and attend all the seminars you want about self-publishing. But if you want to really make things happen, get a mentor and apply to the All-In PaperKat Books Self-Publishing & Mentoring Program. The goal is to produce a self-published book with the help of the PaperKat Books Team and Boldies (Mentees). We offer the fastest route to becoming a self-published author.

This mentoring program is not for people who are simply looking for “writing inspirations.” We don’t spoonfeed. We are looking for ACTION TAKERS – people who are willing to do the work and bring that book idea to life with our team’s help. If you’re an ACTION TAKER, then let’s get to work.

Here is a Sample timeline if you choose the Author Milestone Billing option:

ENROLMENT: First Payment (Php10,000)

  • You enroll, pay the first payment of PHP10,000, and sign the Talent Contract. You get 6-month access to the PaperKat Books Learning Series 1.0 and past recorded webinars for the e-Learning Phase. You finish the Worksheets and we discuss/finalize your Self-Publishing Plans, Book Outline, Author’s Profile, and more via email.
  • Once your Book Outline is approved, you can now write your manuscript. The Book Outline is like a map that guides you during the Writing Phase, this is where we do Developmental Editing to help you tighten the storyline. How fast or slow your write your manuscript depends on you. Some authors enroll with a finished manuscript already; some with a rough outline; and there are people who enroll with just book ideas. And that’s okay. The e-Learning Phase and back-and-forth consultation with me will guide you towards a complete manuscript.

EDITING PHASE: Second Payment (Php10,000)

  • Based on experience, most authors finish writing the manuscript in 3-4 months. It’s on a case-to-case basis. Some take months, some take years, what’s important is that you keep moving forward. Once you’re done with the manuscript, we give you instructions on how to self-edit your manuscript. After the Self-Editing Phase, you can pay the second payment of PHP10,000 and submit your complete and self-edited manuscript to us so we can go to the Editing Phase.
  • On average, the Editing Phase takes anywhere between 2 and 3 months. We do a combination of Line Editing and Copy Editing. The turnaround time also depends on how long your manuscript is (we have a max word count of 60K words per book enrolled in the mentoring program). Once the editor(s) is done with your manuscript, we send it back for approval or to fix story loopholes, if any. The author sends the manuscript back to the editor(s) for spot-editing. We send it back to the author so he/she can approve the edited manuscript for the Design Phase.

DESIGN PHASE: Third Payment (Php10,000)

  • You pay the third payment of PHP10,000 to start the Design Phase. This is when we design your Book Cover (front and back) and the Inside Pages. The Design Phase can take anywhere between 2 and 3 weeks depending on the length of the book and the design specifications.

PROOFREADING PHASE: Fourth Payment (Php10,000)

  • You pay the fourth payment of PHP10,000 to start the Proofreading Phase and Marketing Phase. We send you the PDF file of your book and give instructions on how to proofread. This is also when we can announce your book for pre-orders. In PaperKat Books, we don’t announce pre-orders for books unless we are in the Proofreading Phase, this way, the hype won’t go down. Proofreading can take anywhere between 2 and 3 weeks depending on the length of the manuscript. When proofreaders are done, we implement the proofreading notes. The author then approves the book for the Publishing/Printing Phase.

ISBN APPLICATION & PRINTING OF INITIAL COPIES PHASE: (Php10,000 + 12% VAT)

  • You pay the fifth and final payment of PHP10,000 + 12% VAT to start the ISBN application and printing of 10 initial book copies, as part of the mentoring program. Two copies will be sent to the National Library of the Philippines for ISBN Validation, Legal Deposit, and Cataloging in Publication, while the remaining eight copies will be sent to you. If you wish to print more copies, we will give you a separate print quotation. We will turn over the files of your books to you so you can sell them on Amazon/Kindle, Google Play, Bookshelf PH, and direct selling (ebook and paperback). A Virtual Book Launch is optional.
  • Once the fifth and final payment of PHP10,000 + 12% VAT is paid, we will issue an Official Receipt and the Lifetime Mentoring is activated. You will get lifetime access to our webinars and Learning Series (1.0 and the upcoming 2.0).

Additional notes for author milestone billing

  • Payable in 2 years. If you don’t complete the program within 2 years, your initial payments will be forfeited, and you need to start again.
  • We don’t offer refunds because we want to make sure that you finish what you started. So many authors just start, but never finish. We want to break that cycle.
  • After the fifth payment, the “Lifetime Mentoring” is activated. This means you can consult me for Book 2, Book 3, and Book 4 for free. And you get discounted rates for editing, designing, and publishing for succeeding books if you want to work with us again.
  • This is our way of ensuring that you get to work and that your investment, time, and effort won’t go to waste. It’s called accountability.
  • An official receipt (OR) will be provided upon payment in full.
  • If you choose the Author Milestone Billing option, the consultation is also in milestones. This means that if you’re still in the e-Learning stage, we can’t discuss your marketing plans yet. If you’re still in the Editing Stage, we can’t discuss your book design yet. Let’s do it in stages so you won’t get overwhelmed with too many tasks and too much information.
  • This is just an example of how the Author Milestone Billing works in PaperKat Books. If, for example, you don’t have the budget yet to pay for the Editing Phase or Design Phase or Publishing/Printing Phase, you can pause and tell us that you’re still raising the funds. As long as the entire 5-Payment Timeline happens within two years, you have nothing to worry about. We will make sure that your investment (time, money, blood, sweat, tears), won’t go to waste.
  • We started the Author Milestone Billing to accommodate young authors who want to join our ranks but are having a hard time raising the mentorship payment.

Ready to roll?

If you are ready to achieve a life-long dream, prepare the following:

  • Pitch Letter*. This is a 1,000-word sales letter wherein you tell me who you are, what you do, what type of book you want to write/publish, and who your target readers are. Introducing yourself via a letter can help us decide how the program and our network can help you.
  • Sample Chapter*. Send me your Chapter 1 (Fiction) or Introduction/Chapter 1 (Non-Fiction). Maximum of 3,000 words. We need to see how you write.
  • Endorsement Letter*. Please get an endorsement letter from any of my mentees. Not familiar with them? Go to this link and find the authors on Facebook. I train my mentees to vouch for the potential mentees. Ask them for an endorsement letter.
  • Optional: Book cover designs, illustrations.
  • Please use Word Document when sending us the 2 files. No Google Docs links.
  • Please send everything via email to: paperkatbooks@gmail.com
  • Use this subject line: Mentoring Program Applicant: [YOUR NAME HERE]
  • Successful applicants will be offered a Talent Contract for signing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MENTORING PROGAM

Q: I already have a manuscript, can I still enroll?

A: Definitely! We’ll review your manuscript and if needed, we’ll have you write additional chapters. All manuscripts must have the 3 Major Parts.

Q: I have a book idea palang, can I still enroll?

A: Yes! The goal is to turn that book idea into an actual manuscript that you can publish as ebook or printed book.

Q: Can I write in Filipino? How about Taglish?

A: Our forte is English. But we have a Filipino/Tagalog Editor on board, so we are accepting Filipino manuscripts. We are okay with Taglish manuscripts as long as it’s 80% English, 20% Taglish. In other words, it must pass the Allergic Si Kath Sa Chaka Test.

Q: How many hours should I write? What is the writing process?

A: Once you’re my mentee, you will have access to the PaperKat Books Learning Series with worksheets that can help you create your Book Outline and write the manuscript. We set a deadline for all the tasks you need to do. You can ask for extensions but remember, your publishing timeline will also move.

Q: Do we need to see each other?

A: Only if you want to, haha! Here’s the beauty of this mentoring program: I won’t pester you. I’ll be in the background tracking your progress and crack the whip if you need me to so we can meet your set deadline.

We will have coaching calls (one-on-one and group). As a writer, I understand the need to be “alone” to write. But remember, having a mentor means you won’t be alone in this self-publishing journey. OMG, that’s beautiful. Uy, quotable quote yan ha.

Q: Will the program turn me into a bestselling author?

A: Safe answer? No. But anything is possible. Becoming a bestselling author sometimes requires someone to be at the right place at the right time. Remember, it took years for Harry Potter books to turn into what it is today. What I can guarantee is you’ll have an ebook that you already sell while raising funds for paperback copies.

Q: Can I write more than 1 book within the program?

A: Yes, you can enroll succeeding books in the program and we’ll give you discounted rates for the services. But we must finish editing your Book 1 before you can start on Book 2 because our editing process is back and forth. Best part? Once you learn how to use the 3-Part Template, you can use it for future books!

Q: Can I back out mid-mentorship?

A: No. But if you have a very strong reason why you need to back out, you can transfer to the next batch. However, succeeding batches might have a higher program rate so you end up paying extra.

Q: Can I get my money back if I back out?

A: No, sorry. We don’t offer a refund because mentoring someone is a 2-way investment. You invest in me. I invest in you. You can ask for a “sabbatical”. But you don’t quit. Moreover, we’ve gone through the tedious process of application, hoping to weed out the fainthearted. You must prove to me that you have guts and grit. Because it’s not going to be easy, especially once you get feedback (good or not). Being a book author is not just a dream come true, it’s a lifestyle.

Q: Can I tell people that I’m your mentee?

A: Yes! We love that. In fact, go ahead and brag about it if you want to, but do it in a good way. After all, we are very selective. The fact that we’ve shortlisted you means we saw potential and we are banking on that promise!

Q: Can I pay in installments?

A: Yes, please check the 2 payment options above.

Q: When is the deadline for payment? Do you give official receipts?

A: For this round, you can apply and send requirements from October 23 to November 15, 2023. If you pass, you can pay the enrolment fee until November 30, 2023.  Remember, this rate might not be available by January 1, 2024. The 2024 rates could be higher and might not include all the freebies. Yes, we give official receipts upon payment in full.

Q: When will the program start?

A: The program starts as soon as you sign the Talent Contract and pay the program rate with the payment terms of your choice.

We've created a community where book authors help each other thrive.

Writing a book is the easiest part. What comes after that requires more than talent. You need guts, grit, and more to thrive in this self-publishing. Moreover, being surrounded with aspiring authors who graciously share resources, exposure, and support can make a big difference.

Books enrolled in the program will be exclusively published and printed by HS Grafik Print, our design-print-publish company registered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), National Book Development Board (NBDB), National Library of the Philippines (NLP), and Global Register of Publishers.
