When people, especially potential readers of your book/story, look at you, what do they see? Do they see a talented and confident young author? Or do they see a jejemon BEGGING people to buy his or her book?

Here are some #truthbombs for you all:

  • You will never know how people “see” you.

  • You will never know what people “think” of you. (And when you ask, they can lie to please you).

  • You might be doing, posting, and saying some things here on social media that affect your “author branding” negatively.

When I wrote Bedroom Blog by Veronica for Cosmo.ph (Cosmopolitan Philippines) under the pen name Veronica from 2009 to 2013, the publishing giant helped craft my “author persona”. Here’s what they created:

“VERONICA is your typical Cosmo chick: career-driven, outspoken, fun, and, like most of you, ridden with issues about love, dating, and relationships—which she loves to write about in brief but detailed, engrossing, tongue-in-cheek blog posts.”

When I started my journey in 2014 as a self-published author with my first book Before I Do, I continued that “fun fearless female” author persona but added another adjective, “fierce”. I also built on that COO (child of owner of a printing company) angle. I unapologetically shared that I was able to self-publish my first book because my parents own a printing company, and that’s why I started PaperKat Books because I want to provide self-publishing solutions to aspiring authors that I once was.

That “child of owner” line became one of my strongest advertising slogans and backstory. I owned it. And now, I’m milking it.

When I became a book writing and self-publishing consultant and, later on, a publisher, I continued to build that no-nonsense, high performance, high standards, intense, maldita with a brain and heart branding that some of you love and others love to hate. And in all my works—my books, my website, my social media pages, and more—you will see this consistent branding.

Back then, I thought my slightly snobbish, high standards, almost villainous persona would scare people off. But in reality, the crème de la crème (best of the best) of aspiring authors gravitate towards me because they see the true value of what I offer.

And that well-crafted, almost villainous author persona is what you see, read, and experience in my “showbiz” Facebook account. Why “showbiz”? Because that is the Facebook account I use for my business and life as an author. If you’ve attended any of my talks and workshops, this is what I call the “separation of church and state”. Your private life and public life as an author should be separate, otherwise, you’d have a hard time fending off freeloading relatives who go through your parents to ask for free copies of your book/s.

And that’s what I want young authors here to understand: that you need to build an authentic author brand so you can engage with readers, build a strong following, and, ultimately, develop a robust reputation in the writing and reading communities.

On May 15, 2021, I’m going to teach—for the first time—how to BUILD YOUR AUTHENTIC AUTHOR BRAND. If you’ve heard of the term “personal branding”, that’s just part of what I’m going to teach. The tips, techniques, and best practices I will share come from my years of working in the corporate arena as a copywriter (for brands like Pampers, Olay, Pantene, and Oral-B), designer, copy editor, digital marketing specialist (for a concert arena and a beauty pageant organization), and internal communications specialist (for one of the top multinational companies in the world).

Here are some of the things you will learn:

  • Why you need a “showbiz” author-name
  • How to create your brand logo for free
  • How to determine your power color palette and typography
  • How to turn your personal story into an author branding
  • How to write a powerful Author’s Profile or About The Author copy
  • Why you need a “showbiz” Facebook Profile or Page
  • How to use your Author Brand to fend off freeloaders and sell more books
  • How to stay authentic and consistent using your Author Brand

I want to teach as many aspiring authors as I can, so I made sure that the registration fee is affordable to all.

Part of being a self-published author is selling your book. If you know how to present yourself well, the better you can attract potential readers and engage with life-long readers and supporters.

The internet, especially Facebook, is full of aspiring authors who are doing—more or less—the same thing: nearly begging people to buy their books. Rise above the rest.

Raise your standards…with me.
