About the author

Jean Karl Gaverza is a researcher/ writer on the topics of mythologies and folklores in the Philippines. He is the founder and author of Philippine Spirits, a website dedicated to spotlight the different mythical creatures of the Philippines through illustrations and short stories. He does his research through interviews with cultural communities as well as diving deep into libraries, finding special print sources on the topics he researches.

Having graduated with a degree in Linguistics from the University of the Philippines, he has used what he learned to delve deep in the halimaw (monsters), Diwata (demigods) and other creatures of the archipelago he calls home.

Karl has worked with multiple ethnolinguistic groups and culture bearers, to gather information about their stories including Kapampangan, Tagbanwa, Tboli, M’ranaw, and Panay Bukidnon.

He is also a staunch advocate of propagating Philippine languages. He regularly curates volunteers who want to translate his stories in different Philippine languages. These languages include Cebuano, Aklanon, Bantayanon, Cuyonon, Ibanag, Kinaray-a, Maguindanaon, Masbatenyo, Surigaonon, Waray, among others.
