STORY DESCRIPTION

We made a list, checked it twice, and discovered some of the most promising Filipino crime fiction authors in our circles.

A burglar with a heart; a crime-solving bunch of neighborhood “Marites-es”; a murder de aguinaldo; bitchy bosses getting abducted and/or murdered during Christmas parties; espiritistas solving cases that have gone cold; a stealth operation on Christmas Eve; and more…

Following the huge success of Pasko Na Naman in 2021 and Dystopia Manila in 2022, we bring you Deck The Halls – a collection of one-shot crime fiction stories with a holiday (wicked) twist!

Experience a different kind of “chill” in the air and discover some of the most promising crime fiction authors on our “naughty list”—making their debut this December 2022 with Yuletide-themed crime fiction stories that will keep you up until Christmas morning.

This is a pro bono project of HS Grafik Print and PaperKat Books.

The authors agreed and allowed the publisher to publish their stories in an anthology, whose goal is to give aspiring authors the chance to be published by a real publisher. The project aims to give young authors a stepping stone to more and bigger publishing opportunities. The ebook copies are distributed for free to help new readers discover new authors. The paperback copies are sold at book fairs and on Lazada. Sales from the books power up the next batch of pro bono anthology projects, which then will give more young authors the chance to get published.

REVIEWS

“Apart from the individual stories, the most interesting aspect of this anthology is the unique combination of the genre and the milieu: crime fiction + Christmas season in the Philippines. Veering away from the “very common” (Filipino Christmas, family values) or “very cheesy” (think Hallmark stories!) holiday stories, Deck The Halls Volumes One and Two serve you Yuletide-themed crime fiction stories that will keep you up until Christmas morning.”

“Deck The Halls Volume One’s ‘Saint Nicholas Myra’ is a classic, formulaic tale of a gentleman crook operating in a Philippine setting. The main character, a localized Arsene Lupin shout-out, strikes with skill and cunning to get his target, yet gives himself away as his moral code compels him to use his wits for the side of good. The story plays with the romanticism of Christmas nights, and the cold reality of the recurrence of holiday crimes in the country. ‘Saint Nicholas Myra’ is a quick, satisfying read for those looking for some Christmas action and romance.”

“What a unique compilation of a crime fiction anthology for the Christmas Season! I love the setting of ‘The Christmas Party’. A party like that is meant to have fun with our family and friends but the story tells us that it may turn out differently from what we expected it to be! The plots are well-written. The story is a good material for a full-length fiction story or movie of crime and passion. I would love to read a sequel of ‘The Christmas Party’.”

“Crime fiction plus Filipino Christmas traditions and shenanigans? Who would’ve thought this tandem would work. It worked so well the stories can be expanded into a series, think The Blacklist on Netflix!”

“My favorite story in the series is ‘Last Christmas’. The story is straightforward, uncomplicated, fast-paced, but will tug at your heartstrings. It’s a story for all those silently working during the holidays, and for those not-so-pleasant characters who are still family men.”
