STORY DESCRIPTION

What if Philippine folktales, myths, and legends really did happen? What if scary mythological creatures do exist and are secretly living among us? The Maghirang siblings learned these the hard way.

Maggie, Max, Mart, and Mac’s summer vacation at their grandparent’s province was cut short when some of their family members started disappearing in the forest one by one. Soon, the tikbalangs, kapres, diwatas, and other malignos that their Lola Nimfa talks about during bedtime stories started revealing themselves, and even attacking them.

All they wanted to do is to save their family members who are trapped inside the majestic balete tree. But soon, the siblings realized that to succeed, they must do things that are sometimes more difficult than defeating the enemy—they need to believe that mythical creatures do exist; trust the family they grew up with; and continue living their lives bearing the secrets of their bloodline.

Join the Maghirang siblings in their fast-paced and funny quest that brings Filipino mythology to life.

About the author

B.C. Catam (Bernard Christopher A. Catam) is a psychology practitioner who loves writing fantasy adventure stories with the goal of promoting Philippine mythology and culture among our young readers (hoping that no one discovers that he’s actually a mythical creature). He is the author of Klab Maharlika at ang Hiwaga ng Ibalóng, a modern retelling of the
Bicolano epic Handiong, and has plans to publish more works on the same setting under the Balete Chronicles series. He is currently living in Calamba City, Laguna with his family.
