STORY DESCRIPTION

What would you give to find your soulmate in this lifetime?

Lily Monroe’s life is all about work. And books, and coffee. So, dating has always been a low priority. Alex Thompson, an artist and a full-time immortal, has been grieving the loss of his one and only love centuries ago. One fateful day, they meet.

Suddenly, there’s a spark and a sense of familiarity they both couldn’t place. Could it be just a case of love at first sight, or is it something else entirely? With fate seemingly trying to toy with them, would their love be stronger than fate?

Dive into their world and see what complicates the love between an immortal soul and a human.

reviews

Let me start the premise, that I primarily consume queer related books which this was primarily new for me since this was your conventional romance book. But from the first page to the end, and me counting how many times Laura wrote "flourescent writing" which I messaged her and I appreciated since I wanted it to be incorporated in my own writing.

At Last follows two characters namely Lily and Alex which at first I didn't had any attachment to since it wasn't my cup of tea, but as the story went on and the introduction of other characters especially Vera, I become more enamored and attached with each character.

I was taken aback by each chapter having new premise, surprises and sacrifices which I didn't expect. What I also appreciated (which some readers might find annoying) is the absence of any premise where the book took place. But for me, I found it really imaginatively engaging which I presumed the book took place in a small city in Canada which helped me become more attached with the characters.

Overall, the mix of mythology and everyday life (and the afterward thinking of the reader about the concept of love and immortality) made me finish the book in just four hours. Indeed the book encapsulates the quotes of love and forever.

First, I must mention that I don't read novels in this genre. So, I’m not the best person to give a review. I also rarely watch romantic films. So it took me a while to adjust to this fantasy romance novel, as well as to its soft, feathery writing. But I want to say, it’s nice to read something outside the familiar genres from time to time. And I want to thank Laura for this.

The synopsis might seem complicated - a love story between a human and an immortal, but the writing style and execution made everything seem so simple and flawless. It boils down to the characters being soulmates, and that their connection extends beyond death and existence. Every woman who’d read this would wish someone like Alex exists in their life. I also like that he’s a painter (that's why the background in the photo are my paintings hihi). Although the genres are very different, there are elements of this novel that reminds me of that Mike Cahill 2014 film, I, Origins.

I liked this story because I am fascinated as well by past lives. I’ve read at the back of the book about Laura mentioning she had glimpses of her past lives in some of her meditation sittings. I make sense of this whole reincarnation thing as our souls being water and our bodies being a container, and we just get passed on from one container to another in this long stream of life.

While this novel falls outside of the genres I usually enjoy, I’ll still be very interested on Laura’s future works and see how she will put her own interesting spin in the romance genre. And I will read it again.

"At Last is a beautiful tale of love, memories, and lifetimes that transcend time. The story makes one root for the fulfillment of Lily and Alex’s relationship against all odds. A quick, straightforward fix for reincarnation romance fans."

trivia

At Last has been inspired by the idea of past lives and reincarnations. As well as gods and goddesses from Greek mythology. I couldn’t really pinpoint which deity to appear in the book so she’s nameless.
Lily’s name means “rebirth”. Alex’s full name, Alexandros, means “defender of men” in Greek.
The first chapter, where Lily stands frozen in the middle of the road, was inspired from an earlier scribble I had back in college.
