This is a pro bono project of HS Grafik Print and PaperKat Books.

The authors agreed and allowed the publisher to publish their stories in an anthology, whose goal is to give aspiring authors the chance to be published by a real publisher. The project aims to give young authors a stepping stone to more and bigger publishing opportunities. The ebook copies are distributed for free to help new readers discover new authors. The paperback copies are sold at book fairs and on Lazada. Sales from the books power up the next batch of pro bono anthology projects, which then will give more young authors the chance to get published.

REVIEWS

“[One of the stories in the book is] a dystopian fantasy story showcasing a futuristic Manila controlled by a fascist group called the JSFs. The piece tackled an interesting take on how the future would look if technology is pushed to its limits, as well as a portrayal of liberal and traditional mindsets. What I liked most about the piece is how much the futuristic setting reflected the social issues today. Seeing Astrid yearning for a world without pollution made me feel pity towards those who are yet to be born. A part of me was frustrated that they were being deceived by those who are in control, but the liberal mindset of Astrid, the main character, spurred hope as she delved into the oppressive system of Viridis. Overall, Tomorrow was 3022 is a recommended reading material for dystopian-fantasy fans who’s craving for a piece with a strong futuristic world-building and an exciting adventure of a relatable female MC.”

“As a Filipino reader, I personally find it limited to encounter fictional books well-written to showcase our country that could still depict actual societal faces in humorous statements and urging sentences. N.C. Finnyx’s creative short story, Tomorrow was 3022 in Dystopia Manila, has successfully teased my curiosity with its overall plot. The vivid introduction is well-written that it makes me visualize a very distressing image of a crumbling Manila. My speculating reader’s mind had me thinking, how can this juicy piece of a good plot be a short story when this could be crafted more into a book with series and all—knowing that its N.C. Finnyx’s. The development of the story is neither slow nor abrupt. Though I personally would want to see this story in its glory as a separate book, the ending did not leave a bitter taste. The short story is fully packed with necessary imageries to tease and to hook the reader’s imagination, even until the end.”

“I’m not much of a reader myself. Reading for me is quite a challenge in that I have to consciously make an effort to make the stories come alive in my mind, much like videos, which is a medium I enjoy more. This is why, for me, Dystopia Manila has done quite an achievement. Besides the sci-fi, futuristic, dystopian genre—themes which I certainly enjoy in movies—the stories contained in this book have a way of making me vividly imagine our day-to-day life and settings as truly nightmarish and twisted, while also being purposeful in answering the question, ‘What if we don’t solve our problems and everything just gets worse?’ I can see these stories as those I’ve seen in Black Mirror or Love, Death and Robots, but with Filipino elements. The actions and dialogue playing cinematographically in my mind. I’m sure all authors know that they should aim to write stories that engage with readers’ imaginations, but hey, I’m not a reader. I think if a story can make someone like me entertained and actively imagining, that’s a pretty good story. And Dystopia Manila is filled with such stories.”

“The Dystopia Manila book covers thought-provoking scenarios set in our country’s capital, with out-of-this-world but not-so-distant possibilities of the city’s fate based on the current state of the metropolis. Albeit the fictional elements are quite heavy and strong, each story has a distinct creative flair for a dystopic manila setting. Perhaps this book has the very good intention of drawing awareness to the current problems the city is facing and it doesn’t fail to deliver. Design-wise, the book cover, the typeface title’s color, may represent a leaf that’s turning to wither (from green to yellow), is quite a brilliant input. The publisher really brings its A-game in making the book legit (having ISBN and other stuff). Overall, this isn’t the book should one needs a literary escape full of fantastic, feel-good pills. This book contains Grimm’s Fairy Tales-ish themes that will make the readers think, and might propel them to be purposive in their initiatives.”
