Excerpt from One Day

By Rhisa A. Rey

Twenty-four years old. A mom. An unmarried wife. Yes, not yet married. A lot of people have been asking me lately, when I am going to tie the knot with my boyfriend. A bunch of high school friends was asking me why I still don’t marry, given that we already have a baby. “I don’t know. I’m not yet sure.” This is my answer to each question as to when they will hear the wedding bells.

I love my little girl’s dad. Our friends know it very well. I even treat him as my husband and I call him “hubby” because I believe he is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. He is the one I want to be the father of my children. He is the one I want to exchange my “I do’s” with.

We’ve known each other for more than two years. And our little bundle of joy—our daughter—has been born to this world just in time for our first anniversary.

Lately, as she grows older, a lot of people have been asking, “Are you going to get married on her first birthday?” And my answer is a straight “no.”

It’s not that I don’t want to marry my partner. No, that’s not it. The truth is that I really do want to marry him. It’s just that I believe that having a kid before marriage is not the sole reason to seal your relationship immediately and legally on paper.

I want both of us to be ready. I don’t want us to back out from our relationship one day. There are a lot of things that scare the hell out of me. A lot of “what ifs” and how can I do this and that.
