Excerpt from Flying Solo

By Maria Rosanna Pilapil Punzalan

What are the top lessons you learned about marriage?

Roch: Marriage is a choice and a commitment. When you make a choice, you are also committed to the decision you made. You cannot just back out whenever you feel like it. Giving up is not an option, you have to try to fight for it even if sometimes, it is difficult to fight for your marriage because love is no longer present.

It was never easy, as a teenager would normally view it. It is not a game or a competition wherein there are a winner and a loser. We must be ready to always go for that extra mile for the other person. Extra mile for understanding his/her shortcomings, etc.

Marriage entails a lot of sacrifices. It is not a bed of roses or a picture-perfect relationship. You will be disappointed at times because you expect that the other person would do the same for you. We have to understand that we are different, far more different from each other, but we need to make an effort to be connected.
