Excerpt from True Love is a Game Changer
By CJ Mercado-Ballesteros
Since high school, I’ve always thought about that one true love that everyone talks about.
The kind of love that will make your heart skip a beat. The kind that will make you feel secured and happy and taken care of. The kind that will almost always make you daydream because there’s another person out there who feels the same way about you.
For me, it’s a feeling that is both funny and satisfying.
With all these feelings I’ve associated with love, it also made me think if that kind of love really exists. It made me question the possibility of having another person whom you can really care about.
It made me think if I can care for another person that much—wherein everything you do, will do and can do is for that beloved someone.
I thought, well maybe—just maybe—that kind of love really exists. My mama has proven that kind of love for me. So maybe, it is really possible.
But of course, maternal love is different, unconditional and cannot be really compared to other forms of love we are accustomed to or the ones we often dream of.
So again, I thought, maybe that kind of love is rare, even impossible.
Years passed. I met several men, dated some and had relationships with a chosen few.
But in all those years, it never occurred to me that I am capable of giving the same kind of attention and unconditional love to a man, the kind that my own mother can give me.
